Poem: Confetti

Confetti
(Holey Matrimony)

Confetti! How appropriate! All the colours are a-raining
And falling on the ground that you so rapidly are gaining
But only by subversion, for this cold war knows no force
And if two are to be married then one first must face divorce

Exercise your power while you excise all my plans
You exorcise my spirit as I play into your hands
Pour the boiling oil! This siege could last some time
And as I starve slowly in my castle, victory will be mine

For richer or for poorer? In sickness and in health?
I’ll be broke and healthy, you’ll be queasy in your wealth
‘No’ can mean all kinds of things, but ‘maybe’ just means no
Tell me I’ll ‘find out when I’m older’, and it’s all I want to know

The world proclaims our failure, but even at my best
I still find it hard to ignore the constant beating in my chest
And thus it seems the rock and hard place have to learn to share
If you ever want to see me with real confetti in my hair.
