Wholefoods: The Best Thing On Campus
Published 1 year, 9 months ago in Eat & Drink.Wholefoods Restaurant
Wholefoods restaurant at Monash University is wonderful.
You can tell, because on the wall at uni, someone has written in chalk: “I HATE UNI BUT I LOVE WHOLEFOODS”.

For those who are wondering what exactly Wholefoods is, it’s a volunteer-run vegetarian/vegan restaurant that provides the option of cheap, nutritious meals for uni students in a world of fried food and overpriced cafe food. It has the motto “food for people, not profit”, and includes not only the restaurant part, but a cafe (serving fairtrade coffee), a grocery and yes, an art gallery where students can display their work.
The food is always delicious, and varies from day to day. You don’t have to be a vegetarian or vegan to appreciate the food! I swear, if you’ve tried their sticky date pudding, you too will be back every lunchtime. Every weekday they usually have dahl, rice, three types of main course, soup, garlic bread, dessert, three types of salad and drinks available. And the prices! So cheap! One serve of main is $2.50! One decent sized portion of dessert is $3.00! My sister who studies at Deakin is super jealous that we get such good food for such good prices.
But Wholefoods is more than just wonderful, cheap, healthy food… it has atmosphere and “heart”. Many of the tables are painted in interesting ways, as are the walls. There are couches to sit on, and a piano for students to play, should the fancy take them. There’s an outdoor dining area undercover too, with steps leading down into the market.

So, in conclusion, visit Wholefoods! Even if you aren’t studying at Monash Clayton campus. It’s one of the best dining experiences you can have.

:) Another Wholefoods fan!
Yeah, there’s so many hippies in there. It’s really cool. And there’s always more room at the tables than anywhere else.
Although I’m not sure about studying in there… it’s a bit noisy and they play The Cure over the speakers, and my mind would rather tune in to music than molecular biology anyday!
Yeah, but all i had to worry about were macro, and mini environments, and, or course, there was criminal justice thrown in just for fun.

Ohh okay, good point. Perhaps music would actually help with your study!
Now hang on, i am underselling myself. Coms degree, with marketing and journalism majors. Studying people is part of the game. And, although not science or medicine, still a valid discipline. Without marketing, public relations practionere, or even journo’s, we the people would have to think for ourselves. How dangerous would that be?

I know… arts subjects are just as hard as science subjects… there might not be the contact hours, but there’s more big essays. Mind you, the subject matter IS of actual interest, something I can’t say about science.
In fact, science owes marketing and journalism! If there weren’t very talented marketing and PR people working round the clock on it, no one would study science at all… they’d see it for what it really is! :O
Okay Chaos, i might reconsider the invite to macas

Do they still make the magnificent chocolate and tinned plum cake? I’d love the recipe. Miss those afternoon teas in winter, curling up with a coffee and a slice of choc-plum cake.
YES!! I’m pretty sure they still do the choc plum cake… I haven’t had it in a while, I don’t go there everyday though. I remember the first chocolate pudding I had there… it took me AGES to finish it! I couldn’t believe they serve you so much for $3!
I thought the best thing was their sticky date pudding (the non-vegan one)… it’s awesome…
Come visit wholefoods again sometimes! (Although sadly this year the lines are a lot longer than last year!)
Thanks for that. Now that I know they still do it, I might hunt the recipe down!
Wish I could visit, but I work in the city, so it’s quite a hike now.
