Where can I find a very long winter coat?
Published 1 year, 2 months ago in Shopping.Does anyone know where is a good shop to buy very long coats (as long as possible)?
By “coat”, I mean a warm but not bulky or shiny coat, i.e. not a raincoat or a parka.
Preferably for a reasonable price, (ideally less than $150), and not too “bathrobey” looking.
I’ve tried the op shops, but they don’t have many coats at this time of year and it’s a sort of hit-and-miss whether they’d have a long black one in my size.
Thanks!

I went to Savers in Greensborough a fortnight ago and they had a few long black coats for under $20. I was going to buy one but it was too long for my liking. I want one just above my knees.
Check out the Queen Vic Market, they have some great coats, some cheap, some expensive, but all great quality
Hey Sky, where is savers in greensborough
Chaos, don’t tell anyone, but if i can’t get a decent dress coat at a reasonable price, i am going to make one myself.
Maybe, afer i make mine (succesfully) i could make yours?
Weird isn’t it, former mechanic, truck driver etc, and sewer. In defence of my masculinity, i had two fashion designer wives- learnt a lot just sitting waitting, waitting, waitting, and watching. When it came to restoring my old vintage cars, i relaised i could sew, and did all the re upholstering myself.
PS but don’t tell anyone, it might sound un manly.

What size are you? Do you mind if buttons are on traditionally men’s side?
Skymija - thanks for the idea! I went to Savers in Brunswick, and although I didn’t find a long black coat, I did find a short black jacket for SEVEN BUCKS!!
And much to my delight the place was arranged BY COLOUR!! Shopping made easy. I’ll definitely go back there again.
Jess08 - it looks like I’ll have to trawl the market sometime - either that or just go to Myer. Perhaps next week… I do enjoy a market visit.
Shadowmaster - I don’t think you’re a sewer, you don’t smell bad at all. XD Seriously though, well done - not many men can sew (come to think of it, not many women can sew these days) and it’s a handy skill to have. And reupholstering cars totally gives sewing a masculine makeover.
Thanks for the offer, but I’m a “try it on ten million times” type of person, and I wouldn’t want you to go to all the trouble of sewing a coat (and of course I’d pay you), and then have me go “aww, it’s a bit baggy/short/long/bulky/thin/dressy etc” and not wear it. Not that I think you’d do a bad job - just that I’m picky and weird about clothes.
Stuff - I range in size from 8 to 14 (size 8 wide, size 14 tall). I don’t mind if buttons are on a traditionally male side, but being rather thin I need a “fitted” coat designed for a girl, otherwise I look like a businessman from New York on a lunch break in the park. Do you have any ideas?
Skymija - Thanks for the idea! I did go to Savers (in Brunswick) and although they didn’t have a long black coat, I did find a short black jacket. I’ll definitely be back there.
Jess08 - yep, it’s looking like the Queen Vic market is the way to go… I’ve tried so many different shops already with no luck.
Shadowmaster - There’s nothing non-masculine about sewing - especially upholstery for cars. And thanks for the offer! I don’t know though, I’m a “try it on a million times before I buy” kinda person, so I wouldn’t want you to go to all the trouble of sewing a coat (and of course I’d pay you), and then not like it. But thanks anyway
Stuff - I don’t mind about the buttons (either side), and my size is anything from 8 to 14, but it has to be “fitted” otherwise I look like I’m wearing a tent.
Now there’s a thought. A nook meet at the Vic Market.
Plenty of people and space to get lost in if one feels
inexplicably threatened(most unlikely) and heeps of stuff to do at the market, shopping photography etc, and then of course, melb city is a big place to play.

woohoo! Thanks for posting the question Lady Chaos, and for everyone else for the suggestions! Been wanting to get one for myself too and at an affordable price at that, now while on temporary pregnancy. Hehehe. Now, who to shop with…?
I was so excited, til I “red” the word red.
*sighs with disappointment, and embarassment at the bad pun*.
I dunno about the Vic Market idea for a Nook meet - I wouldn’t want the other nooksters to see me digging un “dig”-nifiedly through bargain tables etc… But there is heaps of cool stuff to photograph in the city.
Hey Chaos, try dying a red coat into a black coat.

Thanks for the ideas, but I found a really good one on sale in Myer - Size 10 (surprised me - I thought I was a 14), mid-calf, black and only $125, on sale from $180.
I checked the dye and you do have to boil it to make it work - most coats are dry clean only, so I thought that might not be a good idea.
But thanks for all the advice!

Maybe try Direct Factory Outlets, they have a variety of stores and most of the stuff is pretty cheap. They have a couple of stores. www.dfo.com.au
