Kew Cemetery - Thanks Winnierose!
Published 1 year, 4 months ago in My life.On the mid-year holidays I visited Kew Cemetery for a photo expedition thanks to a tip-off from Winnierose that it had a really cool memorial there… and I was not disappointed!
A pleasant walk (or tram trip) from Glenferrie station, Kew Cemetery (otherwise known as Boroondara General Cemetery or Peace Haven) is a beautiful place, tranquil, calming and very photogenic. It’s the largest cemetery I’ve been to yet, and its size makes it more peaceful and interesting to walk around.
There’s a mausoleum, a chapel and of course the awesome memorial described by Winnierose, which really has to be seen to be believed. There are also lots of statues (some incredibly tall) and the majority of gravestones are those cool old-style big ones.
If one is interested in visiting cemeteries (and might I recommend it - you’d be surprised what a nice day it makes for), Kew Cemetery is a must.
Here’s some of the photos I took (click to enlarge)

Hey Lady Chaos, I’m thrilled youve been. How Awesome is that place. Not to overlook the cemetary in general, with their wonderful grave stones. The one with the greyhound watching over someones son, was a tough poignant. But the memorial itself is just…beautiful is it not ??? I love the way the red stain glassed roof bathes the statues in that beautiful glow. But I can never get over the fact that her husband adored her so much he had that built in memory of her. Amazing. And very peaceful there.
You look the part there in your wistful shot !! Glad you liked it.

What great Photo’s Lady C! Might have to check out this Cemetery for myself.
Great photos and I ’specally like the one of you looking wistful, there is something of the Corpse Bride about it, (oh & I mean that as a compliment)
Great pics ! Thanks for sharing

Well done, me thinks me and my shadow might just go there very soon.

:) Thanks everyone! It’s definitely worth visiting.
Winnierose - what surprised me the most was how old the memorial was… from your description and the photos I thought it would be fairly recent, e.g. maybe last century or something, but it’s from 18-something or other. It must take hard work to maintain something that cool that well for that long.
Vivavoce - heheheh… thanks!
I take it as a compliment!
Lady Chaos maybe you could jog my memory with her name?? But yes, I can remember googling her at the time I went and she had graduated from Melbourne Uni as a doctor So for a female in those days to do that, well I think she was someone to be admired. And yes, the stained glass roof must take some doing, I was annoyed that vandals had attacked the statues. But we have some lovely things to see in Melbourne and we dont know enough about half of them.
Hmm… I can’t remember, and stupidly I didn’t take a photo of any of the writing except on the side of the statues, and that doesn’t say her name…
Wow… I didn’t know she was a doctor… that’s cool. I didn’t even know women were allowed to go to uni back then.
I think the fact that these things are little known is nice - that way they don’t become big loud, crowded tourist attractions (we have enough of those), but rather things to be “discovered” by Melburnians (on advice from other Melburnians!)
Things to keep our city and suburbs worth exploring.
