Outré Gallery

Has anyone else seen the Outré Gallery in Melbourne?

I went there on a date (:D) on Saturday, and it was absolutely amazing. It’s this smallish art gallery place, FREE to get in, and it’s got the most awesome alternative art you have ever seen, so cool that it’s almost impossible to describe. It’s art that you look at, and you know that it must have taken real talent and hard work (not just some “meant to be good” fluke) to make it.

I found some the artworks to be just a little reminiscent of cartoons or even flash animations, but there is such a diverse range there. They even sell merchandise based on the art. If anyone is even remotely interested in art or if you just like looking at pretty pictures, then you have to visit Outré Gallery. Go, now! Five stars.

A Motivational Poem For Success

A Motivational Poem For Success

Hollywood takes our time, and money too
But don’t let them tell you what not to do
Ignore all their “can’t”s and “don’t”s
Their “shouldn’t”s, “couldn’t”s and their “won’t”s
They lie to sell their narrow world
To naive and trusting boys and girls
You must stay strong, believe in me
Not the cruel lies they feed you on TV
It was a road, they made it a path
Then a tightrope, can’t walk it? They just laugh
Because Hollywood wants us to be all the same
Just pretty clones in their ugly game.

I’m wondering if there’s any events on in Melbourne or the suburbs this Saturday to celebrate St Patrick’s day… Does anyone know of any?

Wholefoods: The Best Thing On Campus

Wholefoods Restaurant

5 out of 5

Wholefoods restaurant at Monash University is wonderful.

You can tell, because on the wall at uni, someone has written in chalk: “I HATE UNI BUT I LOVE WHOLEFOODS”.

wholefoods

For those who are wondering what exactly Wholefoods is, it’s a volunteer-run vegetarian/vegan restaurant that provides the option of cheap, nutritious meals for uni students in a world of fried food and overpriced cafe food. It has the motto “food for people, not profit”, and includes not only the restaurant part, but a cafe (serving fairtrade coffee), a grocery and yes, an art gallery where students can display their work.

The food is always delicious, and varies from day to day. You don’t have to be a vegetarian or vegan to appreciate the food! I swear, if you’ve tried their sticky date pudding, you too will be back every lunchtime. Every weekday they usually have dahl, rice, three types of main course, soup, garlic bread, dessert, three types of salad and drinks available. And the prices! So cheap! One serve of main is $2.50! One decent sized portion of dessert is $3.00! My sister who studies at Deakin is super jealous that we get such good food for such good prices.
But Wholefoods is more than just wonderful, cheap, healthy food… it has atmosphere and “heart”. Many of the tables are painted in interesting ways, as are the walls. There are couches to sit on, and a piano for students to play, should the fancy take them. There’s an outdoor dining area undercover too, with steps leading down into the market.

So, in conclusion, visit Wholefoods! Even if you aren’t studying at Monash Clayton campus. It’s one of the best dining experiences you can have.

Single… again.

Yes… me and my boyfriend of six and a half months broke up…

It was an amicable break up, we both knew it wasn’t working, so it wasn’t a huge surprise.
And I would like to say that it’s good to be single again… certainly there are some good things about “singletondom” (as my sister called it)… you can play the computer all day Saturday, you don’t have to make anyone breakfast, and no more twisting your neck at impossible angles when you watch a DVD or movie…

… And there are bad things about singletondom… not having anything to do on Saturday, no one buying your movie tickets and no one’s hand to hold…

… But the worst part by far is the hope… That wretched optimistic discomfort as you sit on the bus, or at uni, or on a park bench, or as you walk around the mall, as you look at shops, as you serve customers at work… the hope that one of those customers, those students, that one of the random people you see will actually talk to you and fill the empty chasm in your life.
It has yet to happen. They never talk. Even if I talk to them first it’s only a conversation…  never more. The disappointment is almost constant. Try try again, you say, but it’s like trying to fly. You only end up hurt.
And so, I place my metaphorical gun to the head of all notions of spontaneous romance as I prepare to return to the - albeit effective - “last refuge of the damned”… online dating…

Poem: Frightened To Fly

Frightened To Fly

“Touch the stars, you can do it!” he hissed
And pressed one into my hand
“You can have all that you’ve wanted!
Heaven at your demand!”

But as this stranger faded into the crowd
And as we sat in silence, my mind screamed so loud
I could hardly meet your eyes, and my heart felt like lead
I knew what you’d say, and it filled me with dread

“Touch the stars? You can do it,” you sighed
And shackled your hand to mine
“But I won’t be coming with you,
I just can’t stand how they shine.”

Each night I stare at the sky, an unbroken expanse
And as I dream of stars, in my mind’s eye they dance
“What are you thinking of?” you ask me, but how can I reply?
“You,” I say to the man who was frightened to fly.

Holiday at Rosebud

My twin sister Nebula and I (and our respective boyfriends) just got home from our holiday at Rosebud! Thanks to everyone who suggested stuff for us to do there (on Nebsy’s nook). We had a great time! My favourite day was going to Gunnamatta surf beach. :D
Here’s a couple of photos of us at the Boneo maze and wetlands place:

Poem: Confetti

Confetti
(Holey Matrimony)

Confetti! How appropriate! All the colours are a-raining
And falling on the ground that you so rapidly are gaining
But only by subversion, for this cold war knows no force
And if two are to be married then one first must face divorce

Exercise your power while you excise all my plans
You exorcise my spirit as I play into your hands
Pour the boiling oil! This siege could last some time
And as I starve slowly in my castle, victory will be mine

For richer or for poorer? In sickness and in health?
I’ll be broke and healthy, you’ll be queasy in your wealth
‘No’ can mean all kinds of things, but ‘maybe’ just means no
Tell me I’ll ‘find out when I’m older’, and it’s all I want to know

The world proclaims our failure, but even at my best
I still find it hard to ignore the constant beating in my chest
And thus it seems the rock and hard place have to learn to share
If you ever want to see me with real confetti in my hair.

I’m just wondering if anyone else on Nook is going to Monash Uni at the Clayton campus…

… If so, what course are you doing? This year will be my third year of arts/science.

Debt

Debt

To kill them again you must raise the dead
A flick of your hand, a nod of your head
A shadowy shape, a flash of light
As I sink in debt another night

Conductor of the symphony
Commander of the infantry
Parallel lines trapped in symmetry
A metaphor trapped in a simile

A dream in which I must invest
Putting the master to the test
Proven the very, very best
Charging compound interest

Merchant of the mutual power
I purchase in sweet and pay in sour
Swinging between elation and regret
Living each second moment in debt.
